Luddenden Foot BC’s Gareth Swain made a bold bid to beat a 50-plus strong field and win the Halifax Association Merit competition last Sunday.

Swain battled through from the Kingston BC qualifier to reach the last 16 of the P.I.Consultants-sponsored competition at Akroydon Victoria BC.

He was eventually beaten 21-15 in the final by Brighouse Sports’ Mark Regan.

A break of 10 in the middle of the game was the key to Swain’s 21-6 first round victory over his Foot team-mate Phil Brown.

Six singles in a row against homester Gareth Coates was instrumental in securing victory by 21-10 in his quarter-final game.

He faced another Akroydon Victoria player, Ian Smith, in the semi-final and after trailing 4-5 he put together a break of six. He maintained his lead to the end to win by 21-16.

Regan progressed with a 21-10 victory over Robert Hitchen of Elland WMC, a 21-6 success over Hill Crest’s Brian Holroyd and a 21-16 semi-final win over West End’s Bernard Megson.

Quarter-final scores: B. Holroyd 6 M. Regan 21; B. Megson 21 M. Greenwood 15; G. Swain 21 C. Coates 10; S. Conway 18 I. Smith 21.
