Neser signs off with a win

Michael Neser signed off with 57 as Todmorden completed a weekend double in the Lancashire League with a two-wicket home win over Bacup yesterday.

Neser, heading home today to go on stand-by for an Australia A tour, had made a record-breaking 191 in Saturday’s win at Rawtenstall.

Yesterday’s 34-ball cameo helped Tod chase down Bacup’s 178 for nine, which included 74 from Tim Farragher and a wicket for 15-year-old Hamsar Ali on his senior debut.

Opener Ben Sutcliffe made 46 and he and Neser added 87 before Elliott Gilford’s 19 not out saw the home side to the winning post.

Tod, who have offered Neser terms for next year, will be hoping they have not seen the last of a player who scored 981 runs at 89.2 and took 46 wickets at 17.4.

Walsden maintained their puruit of Norden at the top of the Central Lancashire League with a second win of the weekend.

The Scott Street side, who had crushed visitors Heywood by 162 runs on Saturday with the help of an unbeaten 101 from pro Umesh Karunaratne, racked up 268 for five at Royton and completed a 145-run success.

Riaz Pathan (58) and Karunaratne (64) put on 75 for the third wicket and Joe Gale then thumped 87 not out.

Gale’s brother Josh took four for 20 and Karunaratne four for 38 as Royton folded from 87 for two to 123 all out.

Walsden host Norden next Saturday with a three-point gap between the sides.

A miserable weekend for Brighouse in the Bradford League was completed when they were bowled out for 63 at home to Saltaire yesterday.

After losing to bottom club Windhill on Saturday, only Fakhar Hussain (18) and Faisal Hussain (16) made double figures and their promotion-gunning visitors won by nine wickets.
