Ninth-wicket pair thwart battling Tod

Todmorden will be hoping to put the disappointment of a home defeat by lowly Bacup behind them in two outings this weekend.

The Scott Street side host Colne in the Lancashire League’s Twenty/20 competition tomorrow before travelling to Enfield in the league on Sunday.

Todmorden were involved in an amazing game last Sunday, skipper Andrew Sutcliffe electing to bat on what looked a good wicket.

The hosts are lacking injured batsmen Simon Newbitt and Elliott Gilford but that was still no excuse for their slump to 37 for five.

A 31-run stand between Matthew Brierley (31) and Paul Senior (30) stopped the rot but nobody else made double figures and Tod were grateful for 26 extras to help them to 119.

Gideon Foster bowled the home side back into the match with six for 42 and pro Geeth Alwis picked up a couple of wickets to leave Bacup on the ropes at 53 for eight.

But, agonisingly for the home side, that was the limit of their bowlers’ success as a stand of 67 by Jo Sipocz (38 no) and Ben Lord (19 no) took the visitors to victory.

Sutcliffe said Bacup’s opening bowlers had swung the ball well and been too good for the home batsmen.

“When we bowled we knew we had a chance if we got their pro (South African Aubrey Swanepoel) out early and Gideon Foster delivered the goods in an excellent spell but we just couldn’t get the ninth and 10th wickets to clinch the game.

“As a unit we bowled really well to take the game into the 50th over with only 120 runs on the board.”

Sutcliffe said Newbitt and Gilford were likely to be out for another couple of weeks.

Professional Geeth Alwis, Foster, Max Gale and Ben Pearson will make their Twenty/20 debuts for Todmorden iagainst Colne.

Power plays have been introduced for the first time and penalty runs will be awarded if a team fails to bowl its overs in the allotted time.

One point will be awarded for a no result instead of a bowl out or coin toss. Two runs will now be conceded for no balls.Saturday’s league hosts Enfield got off the mark with victory over Church last week, thanks to 99 not out from skipper Adam Bracewell.
