Stafford hot on trail of matchplay crown

Todmorden Golf Club’s Dave Stafford is through to the last eight of the Halifax-Huddersfield Union’s match play competition.

Stafford beat Crosland Heath’s Toby Garrett 2 and 1 and Queensbury’s Karl Smith 4 & 3 in the first two rounds at Huddersfield GC on Sunday.

He now faces 2010 winner Matthew Colcombe from Woodsome Hall over the tough Willow Valley course on Sunday, September 14.

The winner of that tie will play either holder Edward Battye (Bradley Park) or up-and-coming youngster Josh Morton (Huddersfield).

West End’s Chris Ingham plays Huddersfield’s Tom Calvert and multiple winner Andrew Whitworth (Bradley Hall) faces Richard Broadley (Huddersfield) in the bottom half of the draw.

Mytholmroyd’s Aaron Schnacke had an 8 & 6 win over West End’s Nathan Raynor last Sunday but then lost by one hole to Calvert.

Stafford’s clubmate Michael Murray had a one hole win over Halifax’s Jamie Smith but then lost 4 & 3 to Ingham.

Stafford, Murray and Schnacke play for Halifax-Huddersfield against East Riding at Dewsbury on Sunday.

A bumper field of 92 players took part in Sunday’s Open at Rive Rocks.

The father and son team of Simon and Trevor Hemmington won with 39 points on a card play off from Steve McCarron and Rod Hunt.

The ladies winners were Joyce Jesson and Edna Snook with a creditable 43 points

Gill Neely won last Thursday’s Stableford competition wih a magnificent 44 points, reducing her handicap from 21 to 19.

Irena Brown came second with 37 points and Jean Kirk third with 34 points. They were aided by birdies on the fifth and 14th respectively.
