Stead and Khan star for Lightcliffe

Alex Stead hit an unbeaten century
Alex Stead hit an unbeaten century

Alex Stead and Suleman Khan were in superb form as Lightcliffe registered a fine six-wicket home win over Hanging Heaton in the top section of the Bradford League.

Ex-Illingworth and Yorkshire player Gary Fellows made 87 at the top of the visitors’ order and Heaton, who have recruited heavily in the last couple of seasons, totalled 248 for nine.

It would have been more but for the efforts of overseas player Khan, who dismissed the top six visiting batsmen on the way to figures of seven for 46 with his left-arm spin.

Stead, who recently passed 10,000 Bradford League runs, added another 125 to his tally in guiding Lightcliffe to victory with four overs to spare.

He hit four sixes and 14 fours and finished unbeaten, adding 137 for the third wicket with Khan (80).

Brighouse remain next-to-bottom of Division Two after falling four runs short of visitors Great Horton’s 183.

Naeem Khan made 83 not out for the visitors and resisted the efforts of Tahir Khan (five for 36) and Umar Salim (four for 30) to dismiss him.

Mohammed Rafiq (33), Salim (32), Fakhar Hussain (33) and Zafar Jadoon (33) all contributed in the home reply but Brighouse slipped from 124 for three.

Their last two men were bowled by the third and fourth deliveries of the final over.

Illingworth maintained their promotion bid in Division Three of the Aire/Wharfe League with 79-run home win over Horsforth Park.

Richard Farrell-Smith (78) and Aussie James Whiteley (72) helped them to 269 for five and four wickets for Jamie Moorhouse helped limit the visitors to 190.

One-time promotion contenders Northowram Fields continue to back-track in the Central Yorkshire League’s Championship.

They lost by 45 runs at Wakefield St Michaels with Richard Atkinson (78 and four for 29) the thorn in their side.

Wakefield made 207 for seven and the visitors were on track when Christian Silkstone (76) and Chris Metcalf (38) put on 97 after the Rams had been 21 for three.

However, once Silkstone’s fine 55-ball knock had come to an end the tail folded disappointing and Northowram were all out for 162.

Barkisland and Elland both lost by eight wickets in the Huddersfield League’s Premiership.

Barkisland were beaten at leaders Hoylandswaine, their batsmen struggling against former Indian Premier League bowler Zafir Patel.

The quick bowler, who played for Delhi Daredevils in 2012, took six for 48 as Barkisland were dismissed for 143.

Third-wicket pair Sarjinder Singh (55 no) and ex-Elland player Ryan Robinson (51 no) completed a comfortable win for the home side.

Greg Finn made 34 out of Elland’s 98 all out at home to Shelley, who needed only 14.1 overs to wrap up victory at Hullen Edge.

Todmorden lost at home by seven wickets to mid-table rivals Accrington in the Lancashire League.

Todmorden posted 196 for nine with half centuries from sub pro Saliya Saman (57) and Simon Newbitt (54). South African Ockert Erasmus took five for 52 for the visitors.

Accrington openers Ramiz Hussain (54) and Sam Excell (61) put on 110 for the first wicket and although Nigel Doyle struck three blows he was the only successful Tod bowler.

Erasmus (44 no) and skipper Stuart Crabtree (26 no) added 55 to seal victory.
