TODMORDEN Quiz League has a new name ready to go on the Entertainment Brain roll of honour.
John Blackmore of Hare and Hounds B scored excellently on the final two rounds and his total of 12 points was enough to win him the trophy.
Twelve contestants entered - Paul Montague (Todmorden CC A), Mike Paul (Todmorden CC B), Darryl Sunderland
(Woodpecker), Geoff Hill (Hare and Hounds A), John Blackmore, Nigel Bewes, Terri Jones and Viv Boardman (Hare and Hounds B), Simon Dearden, Richard Lees and Graham Greenwood (Fountain) and Brian Hewson (Con Club) all decided to test their knowledge.
Sadly Viv and Terri had to leave early leaving a non-PC all-male contingent. Brian got off to a flyer but faded at the very end. Reigning champ Simon got off to a poor start and never recovered.
Brian was still leading at 10 points after round 7 with Darryl, Geoff and John close behind on 8. A maximum on the last two rounds gave John 12 points and victory, closely followed by Darryl and Brian on 10. Geoff and Simon totalled 8, Paul, Mike and Graham on 6 with Richard and Nigel on 4. In the Handicap semi-finals Con Club and reigning champions Shannon will contest the final.
Starting with a 19 point handicap advantage, the Cricketers lost some of this but were still 10 points ahead after Round 5. In Rounds 6 and 7 two spectacular scores put Con Club ahead and from there they pressed home their advantage and ended up winners by 7 points. It finished Tod CC A 78, Con Club 85.
In the second semi-final Shannon negated the handicap difference in the first round and were one point ahead.
From there they continued to pull away with Hare and Hounds B fading badly in the second half. Both teams appear to be Jeremy Clarkson fans and gained a maximum on the Top Gear link round. It finished Shannon 85, Hare and Hounds B 67.
The Handicap final, followed by this year's Sportsbrain final, were being played last night (April 30)
Wednesday, May 7, sees the Brain of Todmorden individual title, at the Con Club.
The season ends on May 14 with the presentation night and charity quiz which is usually well supported by league players as well as being a relaxed evening. This is being held at Todmorden Cricket Club, Burnley Road, Todmorden.
