THREE fights away from a British title.
That is the dream for Todmorden boxer Peter Newbury.
He has moved from kick-boxing, which saw him grab several regional titles, to challenging in the world of professional boxing.
He has so far had three bouts and claimed the CFK North East Area cruiserweight title this month in Barnsley.
His next target is the Central Area title and, if he gets enough sponsorship, he hopes it can be staged in Todmorden.
His record is impressive after only two years of being in the ring.
In that time, Newbury, 26 has had 17 kick boxing fight in addition to the three boxing bouts.
In total he has won 19 and drawn one.
“Everyone told me I was good with my hands while I was in the ring,” he said.
So a progression to semi-professional boxing became almost natural.
He started training in kickboxing in November 2009 for GMac Kickboxing, of Todmorden, and then boxing just five months ago for Wolves Den, Walsden.
Coaches say Newbury presents the maturity of a much more experienced fighter.
“It’s not just down to a fighter to win his fights, it’s down to the coaches too,” said Newbury.
He thanked Mick Whitaker and Gav Houghton from Wolves Den and Graham McNulty from GMac Kickboxing for their help.
Newbury won his first boxing title with what his coaches described as “a measured and polished performance.
“He showed his skill with timed counter strikes, out thinking and out fighting his opponent.”
He took a 70-strong team of supporters to watch, who all met him ringside after the win with cheers, applause, backslaps, hugs and tears.
There were doubts about his chances before the fight, because a back injury had forced him to cut short his training period for the fight. But he came through and is now fully fit and raring to go for his next contest.
If he can continue to win, he could be British champion by late next year.
Meanwhile his next title fight is in October and may be held in Todmorden pending sponsorship from local businesses.
