Skipper’s blitz brings Hebden chess title

THE result of the final of the Calderdale Chess League Summer Knock-out Competition was eventually decided on Monday evening at the Trades Club, Holme Street, between Hebden Bridge A and Halifax A.

In this time-handicap event, the Hebden side was giving away time on all boards, and they started badly.

However, they fought back, and after Nick Sykes, on board 5, recovered from losing a piece early on to beat his Halifax opponent, John Aldridge, a draw looked possible.

Then captain Dave Shapland, having lost his queen, managed to take advantage of a blunder by his opponent, Carlos Velosa, and, with only a couple of minutes left, forced a win in blitz style, to give Hebden Bridge A the victory by 3½-1½.

Individual results were: M. Parsons 0, D. Ursal 1; D. Shapland 1, C. Velosa 0; P. Leonard ½, A. Dawson ½; A. Wright 1, R. Cully 0; N. Sykes 1, J. Aldridge 0.

A weakened Hebden Bridge C was taking on division two leaders Todmorden A in the Calderdale League.

Their chances looked slim, especially as they were forced to default on one board, but excellent play by Neil Bamford and Steve Priest saw them to a well-deserved 2½-2½ draw.

Individual results were: S. Innes ½, J. Kerrane ½; C. Edwards 0, N. Bamford 1; P. Edwards 0, S. Priest 1; M. Huett 1, default 0; R. Pratt 1, S. Leatherbarrow 0.
