Weather reduces homing races - here are Foot and Todmorden results

Gerry and Sam Marley’s three-year-old cock bird just beat Nigel Poyser and Mark Smith’s bird by the closest of margins to win the Luddenden Foot Homing Society’s rearranged race from Worcester last Saturday.

When the morning weather conditions at Bath deteriorated further it was decided to transport the 282 birds entered by 17 members back up the motorway to Worcester and release them at 12.45pm.

Two hours and 37 minutes later, having flown 106 miles in a North East headwind, the winner was clocked to take East Section pools, the loft nomination and pontoon prize money amounting to £48.

This left the runners-up to win the first knockout competition of the season.

Terry Divers’ bird arrived four minutes behind the winner in third with Adrian and Rowan Leach taking fourth place.

Mick Coulter was fifth and Charlie and Clive Roberts took West Section pools of £27 in sixth with the yearling cock which was third from Cheltenham the week before.

This was a very testing race and a period of 28 minutes spanned the return of the first 40 home and there were some empty perches at nightfall.

This Saturday’s race is from Bath.

l TEN members of Todmorden Homing Society had 375 pigeons at Swainswick for last Saturday’s race, but due to poor and worsening conditions they also decided to bring them back to Worcester.

The birds were released in a strong north east wind which even at 100 miles would mean that a tough race was in store.

First to clock were Mr and Mrs Brian Fisher, flying 104 miles to Lydgate in two hours, 29 minutes.

It was a full five minutes in front of Dennis and Ryan Cullinane in second, with Kevin Thorp third. Next week’s race is from Wincanton.
