ALL Todmorden Borough’s hard pre-season preparations paid off with a demolition job of opponents Walney Island from the Barrow area, winning 7-0.
While it was a great team performance, the second half turned into the Oliver Wood show as the forward slotted in four goals.
While the visitors were a bottom three side last year, they took early points off Borough. This time it was a different story and after the first 10 minutes there was only going to be one winner.
After that they never troubled the home side, who got off the mark after 15 minutes when Lee Earnshaw put away a Wood cross after good work by Dean Farry and Daniel Lively.
Dave Patrick got the second, latching on to a fine pass from midfielder Chris Pearson.
Borough got a third when the Walney keeper was unable to handle a long throw from Mathew Town.
On an immaculate pitch Wood got his first just before the break, heading in a Farry corner.
He was there again in position at the back post early in the second half to head in a cross from the right.
Borough were in complete control and Wood completed his hat trick with a long range effort.
With 10 minutes left he got his fourth after robbing the centre half and rounding the keeper.
Borough will find it a harder proposition on Saturday when they travel to Accrington to play Whinney Hill, but will be aiming to get at least a point in what will be a real test for them.
