Todmorden Hippodrome’s latest musical production, TAODS’ version of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! is a real extravaganza with an incredibly talented cast.

Musicals generally are not my kind of thing, but throughout I found myself with a smile upon my face.

The original spirit of the show is left intact with a flow from action to song that feels natural, yet the choreography is pristine and at some times surprising. It definitely doesn’t feel old with the energy the cast show.

Martin Cook and Jade Schofield are just vocally and dramatically faultless as Curly and Laurey, while Daniel Pardoe as the bizarre Jud brings a darker undertone to play.

While it’s not always funny, the range of gifts the cast show means it doesn’t have to be, although Richard Holley does treat us to some welcome laughs. Katrina Heath is vibrant, Chris Stott is lively, Susan Jones is in her element; I mean I could go on and on.

With an orchestra beautifully directed by Helen Clarkson giving the production a magical quality, an ambitious yet inventive set and a collection of wonderful singing voices; I wasn’t just transported back to cowboy days but to the audience of a serious professional theatre. This is talent to rival the West End. Director Justine Sutcliffe should be very proud. You should be proud of the talent of your town too.

The show runs at the theatre, Halifax Road, Todmorden, tonight and Saturday (7.30pm).
