THIS weekend is your last chance to see the latest exhibition by members of Todmorden Art Group’s Tuesday Club, the latest students in a long line taught by stalwart Jack Jarman since 2005.
Jack, along with David Wynne, Lena Smith, Olwen Jennings, Barbara Hill, Jeremy Burgoyne, John Dobson and others founded the group which originally met at St Aidan’s on Bacup Road.
After a spell at Hall Street in the town centre it was full steam ahead when the town’s railway club vacated the premises at Todmorden Railway Station’s Platform One gallery, where they have gone from strength to strength, adding other rooms except, of course, for the booking office!
Jack had initially begun his own journey attending painting classes run by Moira Smith, who taught him several different techniques. He became gallery manager and a couple of years later a director, and eventually took over the group’s Tuesday classes from Moira, with the help of Barabra Hill.
Running throughout the year it is a mixed class where members and non-members derive a lot of artistic pleasure from Jack’s instruction and guidance. It’s pretty full, with 26 people this year, and incorporates a canal art class under the instruction of Peter Shaw. David Ridings is also an enthusiastic helper.
With founder members like Olwen Jennings, now group secretary, and Jeremy Burgoyne, now chairman and a director, it has solid foundations.
The group has 11 studios which are fully booked with a long waiting list. Open days are run from time to time.
Do feel free to pop in and look at the various exhibitions. The gallery is open four days a week, Thursday to Sunday, from 11am to 4pm.
