The fabulous Barber of Seville Overture ushers in Todmorden Orchestra’s Summer Concert in Todmorden Town Hall on Saturday, June 22, at 7.30pm.
Hard on The Barber’s heels is a poignant contrast from Richard Wagner’s Wesendonck Leider.
The song cycle based on five poems will be performed by soprano, Nicola Howard.
Originally written with piano accompaniment, Wagner also scored the music for a chamber orchestra that played under the window on the birthday of his close friend Mathilde Wesendonck, creator of the poems.
After the interval in a complete change of mood, the orchestra, conducted by Nicholas Concannon Hodges with leader Andrew Rostron, will play Tschaikovsky’s 5th Symphony.
It is a stirring creation of powerful and moving passages interspersed with glorious melodies.
In advance of the popular summer concert members of the orchestra are holding their regular bric-a-brac and coffee morning in the Central Methodist Church hall, Bramsche Square, Todmorden, on Saturday June 15, at 10am.
Tickets will be on sale at the bric-a-brac sale and coffee morning, at the town hall door on the night, at Todmorden Information Centre on Burnley Road, or from the secretary on telephone 01706 817333. Prices are £10, concessions £8 and just £1 for children aged under under 16.
