The Three Valleys Gospel Choir is celebrating its first year under the direction of Alisa Nicholson by hosting a special concert.

The evening of music will take place from 7.30pm on Saturday, July 13, at the Central Methodist Church, Todmorden, and will feature everything from tradition gospel/world to modern soul.

An events spokesperson said: “The concert will showcase a selection of numbers to highlight the choir’s range from familiar songs like ‘Down in the River to Pray’, to classic spirituals like ‘Encourage my Soul’ and ‘This Little Light’.

“The a cappella arrangements of some of the songs will feature soloists from the choir whose members are united by a belief that singing is for everyone.”

The harmony of the performers will be in part thanks to the Community Foundation for Calderdale, which provided the Three Valleys Gospel Choir with a year’s grant in Autumn 2012 for weekly rehearsal space.

Over the last year, the choir has performed in a variety of venues from churches to pubs and at festivals and events, both in the upper Calder Valley and beyond.

Tickets for adults, which are priced at £5 and include a savoury supper, are available at Todmorden Tourist Information Centre, Burnley Road, Todmorden.

Children can watch the performance at the venue in Bramsche Square free of charge.

l The choir, which meets at the Methodist church on Monday evening at 7.30pm to 9.30pm is always looking for new members.

A spokesperson said: “We are a group who love singing gospel music of all sorts from spirituals to funky modern gospel grooves, gospel classics to pop/rock.

“Started in October 2008 the choir is going from strength to strength.

“We are open to anyone who enjoys singing, you don’t have to read music or have sung in a choir before, and we don’t audition!

“There is a wide range of ages involved from eight to 80.

“We are based in Todmorden but we have members from up and down our three valleys; from Clitheroe to Walsden to Halifax.

“Why not join us at the Central Methodist Church in Todmorden on a Monday evening at 7.30pm to 9.30pm, and add your voice to ours.

“We’d love to hear from you!”
