“THIS is ska!” yelled the lead singer of Manchester Ska Foundation at his band’s packed gig at the Polished Knob, Todmorden, last Friday.
And it certainly was - the band must be one of the best you can see for free, their set a rolling juke box of ska classic old and reasonably new, crucially played in skin-tight fashion, writes John Greenwood.
Mixing Rude Boy favourites from the 60s, 70s and 80s, original classics like “Skinhead Moonstomp” and “This Is Ska!” rubbed shoulders with Two Tone era classics from the likes of the Specials (“Message To You Rudy”, “Too Much Too Young”), Madness (“My Girl, “Baggy Trousers”, “Night Boat To Cairo”) and the Beat (a razor sharp “Mirror In The Bathroom”).
It was one train to Skaville worth catching next time.
Tomorrow night the Paul Greenwood Band are scheduled to play classic hits at the venue.
