A stallholder got into the Halloween spirit by giving market shoppers a special treat - a massive pumpkin.

Garry Smith, who runs a fruit and veg stall on Todmorden outdoor market, has had a lot of interest in the formidable fruit, which weighs a whopping 395lbs.

“We’ve had people stopping cars to have a look and people changing their route to come and see it,” Garry said.

“Some have asked how much it is and then ran a mile when I told them it’s for sale for £100!”

The pumpkin, grown on a farm near Hesketh Bank in Lancashire, had to be delivered on a pallet truck given its substantial size.

“It’s part of an attempt to promote the market,” Garry said.

“Supermarkets can afford to promote things but the market doesn’t get a whole lot of attention.”

Garry said if nobody buys it before Halloween, he might cut it up and give it away so people can make their own seasonal pumpkin soup.
