The first Todmorden Food and Drink Festival went down a treat with locals at the weekend, kicking off a fortnight of foodie delights.

The festival gathered 18 local food and drink producers from within a 20 mile radius of Todmorden to put on a range of tasty stalls in Pollination Square.

It was hailed a resounding success by the organisers who said the event was well-attended in spite of the changeable weather.

Mike Hall, one of the festival’s organisers, said: “The atmosphere at the festival was great. Despite the rain, many of the traders sold out completely and walking around everyone seemed to be having a great time.”

The event was organised by volunteer group Upper Calderdale Charity Assist in partnership with Incredible Edible, EatDrink Todmorden and Calderdale Council.

There was a range of local produce on offer from cheese to pork and everything on sale had been made or reared in the local area.

Mr Hall said: “It was all about field to fork production. People were selling food that they’d bred and looked after throughout their lives.”

Organisers say that plans are already underway for the second annual event next year, and are aiming to showcase Todmorden as a foodie destination for locals.

The festival also brought extra trade to Todmorden Market Hall, where punters took shelter during the downpours and were able to browse and buy. Many traders said some people had visited the markets for the first time during the festival and had been pleasantly surprised at what was on offer.

The festival will whet appetites for Todmorden’s first Fabulous Foodie Fornight which will take place over the coming weeks.
