The pub has been there for local residents, whether that be through organising free meals for the homeless, free food parcels for those struggling financially, free use of its space for local community groups right through to supporting creative industries by giving over space to bands and DJs to rehearse and put on events.

The Golden Lion has now set up a fundraising page to ensure the venue will be able to re-open in the future after receiving no financial support from the Government or local council.

Owner Gig Nilavongse said: “Like most venues, we want to support our staff – the lovely people you see behind the bar.

“I’ve been working with them on a plan; we are developing an online presence for Golden Lion.

"I contacted some of the amazing musicians who love the Lion and they’re up for helping us out. Our friend Russell Marland, hacienda DJs, has bounced into action and set up a crowdfund to support the project.

“To clarify, any money raised will go to the staff to keep the project going, moving forward and generating benefits for staff and artists as we move through the uncertain times.

“I’m not sure why we didn’t get help from a Calderdale Council grant.

“But my landlord, Peter Ramesses, has been very grateful and given me the courage and cheap rent to keep me going, and me and Golden lion staff are trying to make this project work.

“The donations are overwhelming, and we promise your pennies will be used wisely.”
