Campaigners have renewed their call for safety measures at an accident blackspot after a collision in the morning rush hour.

The driver of a Daewoo Matiz had to be cut free from his vehicle by local firefighters after the car was in a collision with a blue Volvo double decker school bus on Rochdale Road, Walsden, near Bellholme sports ground, at around 8.30am on Monday.

Carl Fielden, Todmorden Fire Station crew commander, said the man was trapped in the vehicle and the roof was cut off to release him.

He was taken to hospital as a precaution and not thought to have suffered any serious injury.

The bus, which was taking children from Todmorden to Wardle Academy, was slightly damaged but none of the passengers, or the driver, were injured.

There was traffic disruption as emergency crews dealt with the incident.

Nancy Williamson, landlady at the Border Rose pub in Walsden, is organising a meeting to discuss action to make the main road through the village safer.

“It’s not getting any better,” she said. “It absolutely needs some sort of traffic calming.

“People in the village are very annoyed.

“Parents are also getting worried about their children’s safety.”

Nancy has contacted Calder Valley MP Craig Whittaker inviting him to attend the meeting and help their campaign for safety measures.
