COUNCILLORS have given their backing to a proposed residential development on land off Church Lane, Todmorden.
Todmorden Town Council’s development committee recommended approval of the application for three detached homes, subject to concerns about land stability being addressed.
The modern design of the buildings split opinion among councillors.
Coun Diana Tremayne said: “There’s a lot of housing that pretends to look like old housing but it isn’t. I think it’s good to have something different.”
Coun Mark Catterall said if all houses looked the same it would be rather bland. “We should not turn designs down just because we are not used to them in the area. Will they show Todmorden as a go-ahead town? We want to bring people in and show that we are not afraid of new designs.”
Coun Anne James felt that the design was not in keeping with the character of Todmorden.
Coun Andrew Hartley said: “I think it’s a great design but, perched on the hillside, perhaps it is not in the right place.”
