Bang the drum for new bass

Todmorden Orchestra’s brand new bass drum made its inaugural appearance at the first rehearsal of their coming season last Tuesday.

The new drum was funded by Warburton’s Funeral Directors and Todmorden Ward Forum.

It is the full orchestral size required to create the big sound desired by audiences during large scale musical pieces.

The old drum was too small for such endeavours. It was becoming increasingly lost in the sound of the wider orchestra, which in recent years has been growing steadily in membership - and therefore in volume.

The new drum’s debut performance in front of an audience will happen on November 7 at Todmorden Town Hall when the orchestra will perform Rossini’s popular William Tell Overture, along with Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations and Dvorak’s Symphony No. 7.

Other planned performances later in the season include Brahms’ Violin Concerto and Elgar’s Enigma Variations in Spring 2016, and Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake and Ravel’s Piano Concerto in Summer 2016.
