Council hears market group’s ideas

A report into the future of the Todmorden Markets was presented to Todmorden Town Council on Wednesday night.

The report, produced by the Todmorden Market Futures steering group, includes the results of conversations with people around town about the importance of the markets, as well as research into markets elsewhere and an exploration of potential operating models for the future.

The report has recommended that both Todmorden Town Council and Calderdale Council, as the current owners of the markets, explore opportunities for a public, private, community partnership that could bring vital investment into the markets and sustain them into the future.

Copies of the report have been made available at key locations throughout the town and can also be downloaded via participant organisations’ websites.

A meeting to present the results to market traders will be held at Todmorden Town Hall on Saturday at 5.30pm.

Any interested members of the general public are invited to attend a meeting at the town hall on Sunday at 2pm.

Kate Moreton-Deakin, independent chairwoman of the group, said: “This has been a big piece of work that has raised some sensitive issues in regard to the future of our markets, but also some significant opportunities for the future.

“It is now up to our elected leaders to find a way forward that supports sustainability of this vital economic centre to our town.

“The steering group would like to thank all of those people who have contributed to the study.”
