A popular event on the upper Calder Valley calendar will return this summer with new ideas - and hopefully some sunshine.

After being cancelled last year due to the condition of Centre Vale Park, Todmorden Agricultural Show will be staged again in 2014 and organisers say it will be one of the best ever.

Shirley Fielder, president of Todmorden Agricultural Society, said: “We are now going ahead with this year’s show, which has new ideas.

“This will involve local suppliers and business and crafts, which will be found in the ‘Made in Tod’ marquee, and a food court with fresh local produce.

“Incredible Edible Todmorden will also be on site, so please look in their marquee.

“The events ring will again capture your hearts with special treats new and old.

“All we need for our show is sunshine and lots of visitors and some of the very best animals around for your entertainment.

“The effort that the committee put in to make sure that they give you the best show and the best animals around takes hours of planning.”

Shirley, who is the society’s first female president, oversaw her first show in the top role in 2012.

“2012 was possibly the worst ever - what a start to my new role!” she said.

“This year I have ordered sunshine all through May and June.

“Whatever the weather throws at our town we will cope, as in 2012 we proved this.

“The atmosphere was electric, the camaraderie was unprecedented and I would like to say a big thank you to all the workers on the show and all who supported that day.”

During the past year, the show committee has been engaged in talks with Calderdale Council and the Environment Agency about the park and the plans for further work to alleviate the condition of the ground.

The 2014 Todmorden Agricultural Show will be held in the town’s Centre Vale Park on Saturday, June 21.
