Career spanned two eras at school
A NURSERY teacher has retired after 29 years of service spanning two eras in a school’s history.
Maralyn Halstead joined the staff at the former Roomfield Infants School in 1982 at its Stile site.
A year later it became Ferney Lee School, based in the former Todmorden Grammar School building, on Ferney Lee Road.
“The change-over went very smoothly,” Maralyn said.
“There have been a lot of changes over the years but you have got to adapt.
“I have mainly worked with young children in the nursery and in reception.
“I have enjoyed being in the classroom rather than all the paperwork.
“It’s nice when I go out around Todmorden and see adults who still speak to me after all these years.
“We are quite a multi-cultural school and I have made a lot of friends in the different communities.
“It’s been a good school to work at.”
Maralyn began her teaching career at Shade School, where she spent five years on the staff.
She left to have her children and then got the job at Ferney Lee.
She already has lots of plans for her retirement.
“I have just become a grandma so I will be spending time with my little grandson,” she said.
“I’m planning to do lots of gardening, reading, walking and holidays.”
