FIRE chiefs are urging chip lovers to take cake when indulging in one of the nation’s favourite foods.
The warning comes ahead of National Chip Week, running from February 20-26.
Last year, West Yorkshire firefighters dealt with 120 chip pan fires, in which 79 people were injured.
A spokesman said: “The smallest distraction when using hot oil could lead to a devastating fire in a matter of moments.
“Oven chips are a safer and healthier way to enjoy your old favourite.”
Safety tips have been issued for deep fat frying.
If cooking with a chip pan and it does catch fire, firefighters urge people to get out, stay out and call 999.
