Earlier this week, the driver of a black Peugeot travelled from West Yorkshire to the A590 just outside of Kendal, but were told to turn around by Cumbria Police.

Since the second lockdown was introduced on November 5, it is now illegal for non-essential travel outside of each borough.

The Twitter page said: "The circumstances of an earlier tweet regarding a vehicle travelling from West Yorkshire to Cumbria have now been reviewed.

"A fixed penalty fine was issued as the occupants of the vehicle were outside the place they live without a reasonable excuse.

"In law, people cannot leave their home except for a defined set of legal exemptions, none of which applied in this case. The issue of the distance travelled was not relevant to the issuing of the fine.

"The Constabulary does not issue fines for failing to adhere to guidance or advice and only does so in respect of breaches of the Health Protection Regulations. We apologise for the misleading wording of the earlier tweet."
