D-day for Netto plans

After months of debate, a decision will finally be made next week on whether to grant planning permission for a Netto supermarket in Todmorden.

Netto wants to build a store and car park on the site of the former Abraham Ormerod Medical Centre and Olympia cinema, on Burnley Road.

Calderdale Council’s planning committee will give its verdict on the supermarket plans when it meets on Tuesday.

Councillors will be faced with two applications - one which would retain the ornate frontage of the former Olympia cinema and incorporate it into the supermarket design, and another which would demolish it.

The council’s planners have said that retaining the frontage or demolishing it would be acceptable.

The Netto plans have been a hot topic in the town since the first application was submitted to the council last summer. They have also attracted national attention, with several major societies writing to the council to object to the potential demolition of the cinema frontage.
