WORKS costing £110,000 to lay new gas mains in parts of the town are due to be completed by early September.
Northern Gas Networks is to complete work on the gas upgrade that it says will ensure a continued safe and reliable supply of gas to the Rochdale Road area of town for decades to come.
The work, already well underway, involves replacing around a kilometre of ageing metal gas main with more durable, plastic pipe.
Engineers from Enterprise are carrying out the work on behalf of the area’s gas pipeline owner.
In all, upgrades will be carried out on a short section of Rochdale Road as well as Copperashouse Terrace, Gauxholme Stones, Mona’s Terrace, Stones Terrace, Pellon Street and Alma Road.
All customers affected by the work have been contacted by letter and engineers will be available on site to advise traders and residents regarding progress, said a NGN spokesman.
In order to carry out the work safely, it will be necessary to close Alma Road at its junction with Rochdale Road for two weeks from August 15. Two-way traffic lights are already in place on Rochdale Road and will move along the street as work progresses.
Area operations manager Mick Hewett said: “The new pipes we are putting in are more durable and flexible with an expected lifespan of around 80 years, so the good news is that once we are done in this part of Todmorden, we won’t need to come back for some time.”
