A COUPLE will embark on a charity motorbike ride from Lands End to John O Groats in memory of a friend who was killed in a crash last year.
Mike and Rachel Barrett are aiming to raise £1,000 for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance in memory of their close friend Mick Hopson, from Todmorden, who died after his Yamaha motorbike collided with a Volkswagen Polo in Milnrow last October.
Mike, who had known Mick for ten years, said: “When he died, it just felt like I had lost my brother because we were so close. It was very tragic. At his funeral I just felt like I needed to do something.
“He was such a nice guy who added so much to people’s lives. I felt a bit guilty that I had done nothing other than for myself.
“Afterwards, a part of me didn’t want to ride my bike any more but Mick would not have wanted me to do that, so I decided to do the ride.”
Mike and Rachel, of Liversedge, are hoping to cover 300 miles a day, completing the journey in roughly three days in May.
Some of the couple’s friends will be meeting up with them at various stages to accompany them along sections of the route.
Mike and Rachel were invited to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance base at Yeadon for a guided tour earlier this month.
“It provides such a vital service, particularly with bikers,” Mike said. “With a lot of cases of biking accidents, they tend to be out in the countryside. Yorkshire Air Ambulance is ideal for that kind of rescue.”
He added: “I think it has sort of stirred my interest in charity work. It’s opened up a whole new world.”
