WEST Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service is encouraging people to check their smoke alarms this Christmas.
The festive period should be a happy time for everyone, but it can bring additional hazards in the home.
A smoke alarm provides vital seconds of warning which could make the difference between life and death.
The brigade’s Celebrate Safer campaign also urges people to refrain from drinking alcohol while cooking, take extra care using candles and check their Christmas lights are in good working order.
Home owners should also ensure that they and any family staying with them are aware of the safest escape route in case of fire.
Assistant Chief Fire Officer Craig McIntosh, director of fire safety, said: “We want everyone to enjoy this festive period with their friends and family, which is why we are promoting these vital safety messages.
“The best gift you could give to your family this Christmas is life – check your smoke alarm.”
