A women’s cancer support network has been awarded nearly £6,000 of lottery funding to enable it to continue the valuable services it provides.

Living Well, which meets in Todmorden on a monthly basis, provides support, therapies and treatments for women in Calderdale who are living with cancer.

The group applied to the Big Lottery Fund and has successfully secured a £5,993 grant.

The much needed funds will help to pay for meeting room hire, an experienced cook to provide meals using healthy and anti-cancer ingredients, and cancer-related training for the volunteer complementary therapists.

Money will also be spent on publicity leaflets and a website to help promote the group.

Carol Sellars, Living Well’s treasurer, said: “We are delighted to receive these funds.

“Living Well helps women with cancer gain a sense of hope, vitality and positive energy.

“The complementary therapies help us feel relaxed and cared for, and users offer support and friendship.

“This money will ensure more women know about the group and become involved and enable Living Well to flourish in the coming year.”

Carol said the grant is a big boost to the Living Well group, as attracting funding is difficult.

“We depend on donations and legacies in people’s wills,” she said. “We do some fundraising but it’s always quite difficult to raise the funds to keep running.”

Living Well welcomes all women who have or had cancer, and their carers and supporters.

Carol said the group provides a valuable port of call as a follow up to hospital treatment.

“The support you get just by coming and talking to people who understand what you’re going through is really important,” she said.

“For people who have had treatment for cancer, relaxation is an important thing. It helps to deal with the worries that can come along.”
