LIBRARY opening hours in Calderdale will be slashed from Monday.

Hebden Bridge, Todmorden, King Cross and Sowerby Bridge libraries will now open for 37 hours a week; Rastrick Library for 30 hours a week; Hipperholme, Northowram and Skircoat libraries for 25 hours; and small changes will be made at Mixenden and Shelf libraries.

Calderdale needs to make £150,000 of savings in the library service’s budget for 2012/13, but all of its static libraries will remain open.

The council says the priority is to keep the open hours convenient for people and the adjustments are based on a thorough analysis of customer needs and usage patterns at each library.

The new opening hours are on the council’s website, www.calderdale.gov.uk

There will also be changes to the mobile library service next week. It will replaced with the Home Library Service for people who are unable to travel to a static library due to mobility or health issues, and people in residential care.

The changes are based on the libraries Review, in which the majority of respondents said they would prefer these changes to completely closing any libraries.
