In these days of cut-backs there are many stories of people re-training in order to improve their chances of financial security, but for Martin Cook, becoming a student again was not a way to pay the rent but rather to play Rent!
Rehearsals are now underway for the Todmorden Operatic and Dramatic Society’s production of Rent, the musical that took the world by storm in the 1990s and Martin has undertaken the role of Roger Davis, a struggling musician hoping to write one final song.
To do this, Martin, a teacher at Westborough High in Dewsbury, has gone back to his childhood to learn the guitar.
“I started learning the guitar when I was 11 but never took to it. I’ve now got two months before Rent opens and I need to know how to play. It is vital to the portrayal of Roger who is never without his guitar. It is an extension of his character,” said Martin.
Rent will run at the Hippodrome Theatre, Todmorden, from Tuesday, April 12 to Saturday, April 16.
