CALDERDALE’S first sewing cafe will open in Todmorden on Friday, July 29.
People will be able to hire sewing machines by the hour, take part in craft groups and courses and get advice on projects at Cheeky Sew and Sew, on Rochdale Road in the town centre.
It is the brainchild of local sewing enthusiast Tansy Dyer, whose aim is to provide a supportive, creative environment for people who want to learn and practise sewing, knitting and other fabric-based crafts.
Tansy said: “There has always been a strong interest in fabrics, handicrafts and recycling locally. This, coupled with a growth in the ‘make do and mend’ attitude nationally due to the recession, led me to come up with the idea of the sewing cafe.
“I want it to be affordable, open to all and a fun environment that encourages people to develop creativity and resourcefulness.”
On Friday there will be free sewing machine hire all day, a craft group on customising clothes and an introduction to knitting course.
A clothes swap party will be held on Saturday from 7pm to 9pm with a cocktail bar opening at 6.30pm.
