'˜A new state of the art building will ensure that our students achieve their full potential.'

That’s the message from Chris Taylor, executive headteacher at Todmorden High School, as plans for a new building at the school get underway.

Proposals have been submitted to Calderdale Council for a combined English and Humanities building. When that is completed, the existing, separate English and Humanities buildings will be demolished, creating additional car parking spaces and a new games area.

The news is the latest development in a long battle for the school, which has fought tirelessly for facilities to be improved.

In February 2015, Calder Valley MP Craig Whittaker took to the roof of the school to show his anger at the Government’s decision to snub a funding bid to fix its crumbling buildings.

Speaking about the plans, Megan Swift, Calderdale Council’s cabinet member for children and young people’s services, said: “The council has invested over £1 million into the management of the buildings and infrastructure at Todmorden High School in recent years to tackle their deteriorating condition and ensure the best possible learning environment for students.

“We are also funding a major scheme which will see the replacement of old and leaking roofs throughout the school, the demolition of buildings that are in a poor condition, and the construction of a new teaching block within the existing school site. This exciting project will create a new two-storey building to meet modern educational needs and enhance the learning experience for students.

“Planning applications and site investigation are already underway and the target date for the completion and use of the new building is the end of 2017. The old blocks should be demolished and the affected areas reinstated in early 2018.”

Mr Taylor added: “Our new state of the art building will undoubtedly support our ongoing quest to ensure that all of our students achieve their full potential and successfully progress into education, employment or training.

“We have a very strong staff team who are committed to providing the best possible learning environment. It will also help to communicate to our students that they deserve the best quality provision – and support our belief that they clearly do.”
