A business is full of beans as it celebrates a successful first year.

Hebden Cook and Coffee Co. opened for business in 2013 and the year has been a steep learning curve for owners Val Cryne and Karen Hayes.

Before opening the Carlton Street store, neither had retail experience, but a love of shopping inspired the friends of 40 years to fulfil their ambition of opening a cook shop when the chance came along.

But it hasn’t all been plain sailing for the pair - setbacks came in the form of major works carried on the doorstep of the shop, causing inconvenience to businesses and shoppers.

The friends said: “There have been some frustrating times, as recently the whole of Hebden Bridge was brought to a standstill when Yorkshire Water dug a huge hole directly outside the shop door.

“We were completely fenced in. But on a positive note the ground team were a great bunch of guys who came in for a regular brew,”

The friends will celebrate the shop’s first birthday with a champagne and canape event on October 30. Join in the celebrations at the store from 4pm to 8pm. On the evening, there will be a representative from Kitchen Aid, who will whip up some tasty treats for customers. The girls added: “We would like to thank all customers and friends for all the support and help during this first year and hope to see you all soon.”
