Practical support from a peer solution
Enterprise Rockers, a national enterprise peer support network, raised several hundreds of pounds during December and January from an earlier initiative called '˜Hit The Rocks' to support micro enterprises facing crisis.
In the aftermath of the floods over Christmas, it wished to see how it could use this money to support local Todmorden businesses with their ongoing recovery, having been impressed by the ways in which enterprises in the town have rallied together help each other recover their livelihoods.
It sought to find an option for how this relatively limited amount of funding could be used that would be equitable to all businesses hit by the flooding, regardless of their industry, marketplace, and activities, and has decided to sponsor free office supplies to any micro enterprise in Todmorden that have been affected by the floods in any way (such as loss of stock or equipment, or loss of trade).
This is on the basis that whatever any business does, at some point it will need to print something, and so need ink and paper.
Todmorden Computers on Halifax Road has offered to support their gesture by making paper, ink cartridges, and memory sticks available at cost price to help the money reach more businesses. Adrian, who owns the business, is excited at the prospect: “We’ve all seen how the floods have hit businesses in the town over the last few months, regardless of if water got into them or not.
And while there are other grant schemes and support offers out there, I’m pleased to be part of this one as it doesn’t include having to ask business owners to fill out any application forms!”
Any micro enterprise (employing nine people or less) can visit Todmorden Computers to claim office supplies to the value of £25 until the funds available are used up. There will also additional information available there for them to pick up which details some of the other grants and other sources of support that they may also be eligible for apply for.
Adrian Ashton, a local consultant who was instrumental in Enterprise Rockers’ decision to want to make this offer of support to the town’s businesses is enthusiastic about what it represents: “While it may not seem much, it’s another example of how local small businesses and sole traders pull together to support each other when trouble hits. I’m hopeful that through taking up the offer of free office supplies, some businesses will also learn of other support they can access that might have otherwise passed them by.”
