Sadness as centre shuts its doors

A CENTRE which has provided vital support for the local community for nearly a decade has closed due to a lack of funding.

The Acorn Centre, on Burnley Road, Todmorden, offered training, services and advice to hundreds of unemployed people but was forced to close its doors last week, resulting in the loss of nine jobs.

In a statement to the Todmorden News, the board of trustees said: “It is with great sadness that the trustees have to inform the people of Todmorden that the Acorn Centre is now closed.

“As readers will be aware, the centre has been struggling for some months. Unfortunately fundraising has not been sufficient to cover costs and creditors.

“The trustees had been negotiating with another much larger charity with the view of merging but the pressure of time and actions of creditors made this impossible.

“The only action left to us was to put the company in voluntary liquidation.

“We are so grateful to the staff, who have been faithful and supportive until the end, with no guarantee of remuneration. We have also had magnificent volunteers and friends who have been helping as much as they can.

“Despite the fact that people have been flocking into the centre since the New Year, this has not brought in the funds that are required to keep it going.

“The Acorn Centre opened in 2002 and has had thousands of people passing through its doors.

Many have benefited from courses and activities which have been provided, as well as the opportunity to meet friends and socialise in the cafe.

“We would hope that there is someone who could possibly purchase the building for a similar purpose in order to continue this necessary provision for Todmorden.”

The centre has been working closely with Calderdale Council to ensure that alternative employment has been found for all the people who were on Future Jobs Fund placements at the centre.

News of its closure follows less than a year since Todmorden Together was forced to shut due to a funding shortfall.
