Homeless 56-year-old Raymond Warren approached his first victim as she waited for a bus and when the vulnerable student tried to fight him off he dragged her into nearby bushes where the sexual assault continued.

The attack last October was only stopped when a member of the public who knew the complainant intervened.

Bradford Crown Court heard on Tuesday that shortly after that attack Warren approached a 60-year-old grandmother as she waited for a bus and put his hand between her legs over her clothing. The grandmother, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, described Warren as being angry and muttering and she said she could smell his body odour and the stench of alcohol.

After his arrest Warren claimed that the 20-year-old complainant, who also cannot be identified for legal reasons, had “fancied him”.

But Jonathan Rose heard the complainant had become withdrawn after the attack and increasingly anxious.

The court heard Warren had more than 40 previous convictions for over 80 offences, but none of them were for sexual matters. He admitted two charges of sexual assault and Judge Rose noted that at the time of the offences Warren was already subject to a suspended jail sentence and a conditional discharge.

Jailing Warren, Judge Rose said: “There is now quite clearly a risk that you are prepared to continue drinking and to offend and to offend in a sexual manner against women who are very vulnerable.”

Judge Rose added a further six weeks to Warren’s 18-month jail term for the breaches of his suspended sentence and the conditional discharge.

Warren will now be subject to sexual harm prevention order for life.
