Squadron at camp, and Sam makes his first solo flight

MEMBERS of 2447 (Calder Valley) Squadron have had a busy few weeks.

More than 10 of the squadron’s cadets went to a camp in Dalby Forest, near Pickering, from August 8 to 11. Activities included mountain biking, hiking and a visit to Scarborough. The camp was in co-operation with other Yorkshire squadrons.

Some significant achievements have also been made. Newly-promoted Corporal Sam Barker looks forward to developing his leadership skills in the team of cadet non-commissioned officers. Sergeant Dan Furminger has gained a BTEC in Public Services and Flight Sergeant Sam Booth has flown solo for the first time at RAF Linton-on-Ouse.

Additionally, the recently-promoted Cadet Warrant Officer Dan McCormack has completed a C Category gliding instructor’s course at the Air Cadets Central Gliding School. This allows him to train other cadets up to solo standard.

Opportunities such as these are open to any cadet who shows the required enthusiasm and aptitude. The squadron parades on Monday and Thursday, 7pm to 9.15pm, and is open to young people aged 13-17.
