NOBEL prizewinner Sir John Cockcroft is profiled in a new film for schoolchildren which has been made by the BBC.
The Todmorden born scientist, along with Ernest Walton, successfully split the atom and they were awarded the Nobel prize for physics for their work.
BBC Learning have produced the film as part of an educational series - History Hunt - on local heroes. It is for use by teachers in schools for Key Stage 2 children undertaking historical research, said associate producer Kieran McCarthy.
Sir John’s son Chris was among those interviewed by Todmorden children carrying out the investigation into his life and work in the film.
The first five episodes will be broadcast on BBC2 learning zone on March 27 from 5am (the aim is that teachers can record them) with the programme on Sir John being the third of the five.
They will also be available online.
