Top author to be patron of library group

NATIONALLY known author Cate Haste has agreed to become patron of the Friends of Todmorden Library Group.

Ms Haste, who is married to television broadcaster Melvyn Bragg, will lend her backing to the group, which aims to protect the library from cuts which may be imposed.

Steph Booth, of the group, said she was delighted the novelist, who is a Yorkshire woman, had agreed to lend her support.

Mrs Booth said the group now had a blog spot at which she hoped people would use to add their comments and thoughts and exchange views. The group was also running a children’s competition to design its logo, with entry forms having gone out to schools. They were also working with the health centre, looking at the idea of books on prescription if it would help some patients.

A monthly newsletter would also be appearing and sent to people who had left their e-mail addresses at previous meetings. If anyone who had left their email address did not receive one, they are asked to email Mrs Booth on

She said a preview evening of logo designs would be held at the library on April 14 with the winning entry announced a day later.
