An urgent appeal has been put out for ‘strong, fit volunteers’ at a Todmorden food bank.

As the winter draws in, Todmorden Food Drop-In expect more and more families to need their help, and are in desperate need of people to sort donations.

The independent food bank are also encouraging people to give warm, nutritious meals such as cooking sauces, pasta, rice and tinned protein.

“As winter gets colder, we know more people will come to us.

“There are a lot of people sleeping rough in the area, and we are particularly in need of hot, nurishing food to keep people going,” said Janet Garner, chair of the Todmorden Food Drop-In.

The drop-in say they would be especially grateful for help in the middle of the week with lifting and carrying, as they are often short on volunteers at these times.

The food bank help up to 100 families a week, and although they interview each family, they take them mostly on trust.

While people can often manage during the summer months, families with little money are hard hit during the winter when they need food and hot drinks to keep warm.

The food bank have noticed a surge in people needing their help in the run-up to Christmas and have an appeal at harvest time for more food and volunteers.

The drop-in is only in its second year, and after people’s enormous generosity at last year’s campaign, they are not accepting any bedding or clothing.

Ms Garner said: “We’ve been quite overwhelmed by the response in the past, so we’d ask people to take any bedding or clothing to the local charity shop.”

The drop-in are also not accepting donations of fresh food, as it is difficult to store and can go to waste if not used quickly enough.

There is a drop-off box at the back of St Mary’s Church where anyone can make donations, and there are also collection points throughout Todmorden and Hebden Bridge.
