Organisers of the Hebden Bridge Bonfire - one of the biggest events in the area - have cancelled the 2013 event due to concerns about yobbish behaviour, underage drinking and drugs.
Hebden Bridge Round Table said they have been left with little choice but to cancel the event, which has been running for more than 50 years, because a minority of people were forcing families to stay away.
Member Neil Smith said discussions were ongoing with Calderdale Council about hosting an alternative event in the autumn. No decision has yet been made about the bonfire’s future from 2014 onwards.
Mr Smith said: “We’re very sorry to have taken this decision. However, the last few years has seen a significant switch from the family themed event it was designed as and more towards an intimidating youth event.”
