The Fielden Society wish to support the initiative of the Todmorden Civic Society in their proposal to construct a working water wheel near the site of the original wheel at Waterside.
We often complain about the derelict sites at the gateways to our town and reconstruction of an aspect of our industrial heritage would much enhance the approach to the Walsden valley. There are few wheels which remain in working order and accessible to the public. Remembering the history of Waterside, the proposal would provide educational opportunities for both children and adults to understand at first hand how water power was harnessed 200 years ago to drive our cotton mills.
There are many heritage buildings in the town with a Fielden connection and to erect a water wheel will remind us today of the crucial part played by our Fielden family, and by Honest John Fielden MP in particular, in the development of the cotton industry.
The proposal is another step by local initiative towards putting Todmorden firmly on the tourist map. It has our wholehearted support.
