New group run for, and by, autistic adults

Further to Mary Maclean’s letter about the poor state of support services for autism spectrum adults (including Aspergers), I would like to inform Upper Valley readers that I am aiming to start a group, initially based in Hebden Bridge, by and for autistic adults.

The group will serve three functions: peer support, social opportunities, and action – campaigning for better local autism services and offering training to professionals who come into contact with autistic people.

I am a 40-year-old autistic woman who has had major difficulties getting my support needs met over the years.

I have lived in the upper valley most of the last seven years, and currently reside in Heptonstall.

I have been on the organising committee of Autscape (, the annual three day by and for autistics conference in the UK. I hope this new group will continue the Autscape ethics of providing safe autistic space and encouraging autistic self-knowledge and self-advocacy.

Anyone interesting in attending the group, and especially anyone on the autism spectrum (including Aspergers) who could offer some help in organising it, can contact me, Ametrine Ruth Lavender, on 07742 534590 (phone or text), or email

I hugely look forward to meeting other local autistics, with or without formal diagnosis, so please get in touch!
