Perhaps it’s in the wrong place

Hole Bottom Road,

the replacement of the Stansfield Road roundabout by a “state of the art” traffic light system will inevitably result in a huge increase in delay and congestion.

Roundabouts are comparable to steam engine governors in their elegance, simplicity and efficiency of operation.

They are optimal in terms of overall delay for all but the heaviest traffic flow; and compared to traffic lights, their installation and maintenance costs are miniscule.

Unusually, for a town of its size, Todmorden has two roundabouts, no traffic lights and little traffic congestion.

Long may that continue.

If a supermarket entrance requires a “state of the art” traffic light system, then perhaps it is in the wrong place.
