Ayrton launches Brods try feast

The firsts were totally dominant against their visitors from Middlesbrough, quickly stamping their authority on the game.

Following safe receipt of the kick off, which resulted in a scrum to Brods, the ball was moved swiftly right to young winger Jasper Ayrton, making only his second appearance for the senior side.

He rounded his opposite number and finished in fine style in the right hand corner.

The Woodhead men looked confident with the ball in hand and forwards linked with backs in a fine move, resulting in teenage prop Reece Ward powering over in the seventh minute.

There was no let up as Brods dominated possession and it was the turn of American Benny Pritchett to score next. He made a charge from half way, scattering defenders and showing rare pace for a prop before touching down to make it 15-0 after 10 minutes.

Matty Hoyle has certainly rediscovered his form and he looked dangerous joining the line from full-back. He finished a fine move on 25 minutes to secure an important bonus point for the club.

Olly Akroyd was having no luck with his conversion attempts but hit the target after Pritchett’s second try on 34 minutes, following a further period of Brods’ pressure.

It was 27-0 at half time and the Brods coaches took the opportunity to introduce bench players Alex Dawson, Phil Town and Matt Raven. Town went to fly-half, Dom Georgiou to scrum-half and Chris Vine to full-back.

Town immediately showed his class with a superb break from his own half, his line and pace breaking the first line of defence and he found a further gear as he rounded the cover to score an excellent try.

Acklam clearly could not live with the pace and power of their hosts and on 56 minutes Dawson, Town and Georgiou linked to give another teenage starter, Tom Wilson, the chance to extend the lead to 37-0.

Despite losing Rob Jennings to a yellow card, Brods remained in control and Ayrton added to his tally before Ward did likewise, following a break from Vine.

Dawson then displayed his strength to power through and extend the lead to 52-0.

In the closing seconds Hoyle claimed a deserved try and Town landed only the second goal of the match.

The bonus point win lifted Brods to third, with a big points difference, and confidence is growing with several more players due to be available in the next few weeks.

The seconds returned from Ripon with a hard earned 19-7 victory and the Beavers enjoyed an equally important win at Hemsworth.
