Elland lose basement battle

Elland slipped to the foot of the Huddersfield League's top flight when they lost by 108 runs at home to Honley in the battle of the bottom two.

Their batting again let them down.

Alastair Finn dismissed three of the visitors’ top four in good time but Lewis Kenworthy stood firm with 97 not out in Honley’s 214 for six.

That proved more than enough as Elland crumbled to 106 all out with middle order man Muhammad Wadee’s 31 the top score.

Barkisland were 43-run winners at Shelley, who slipped to second from bottom.

Darren Robinson’s hosts made 251 for eight, with Alex Scholefield’s 65 the top score, and Shelley were all out for 208 in reply.

Lightcliffe are breathing far more easily in the Premier Division of the Bradford League after a comprehensive seven wicket home win over Morley.

They ended a mini slump and climbed to seventh in the table with fine batting from their top order.

Third-from-bottom Morley posted a respectable 203 for eight thanks to Matt Baxter (60), Kashif Naveed (46) and Colin Nuthall (30). Quick bowler Jonny Whoteoak and spinner Suleman Khan took three wickets each.

Lightcliffe captain Alex Stead continued his good form with 62 but was happy to play second fiddle to Ian Philliskirk, who made 88 at quicker than a run a ball in an opening stand of 117.

Stead and Jonathan Wilson then added 72 before the skipper departed and Wilson saw the home side through to victory with 44 not out.

Brighouse slipped 23 points behind third-from-bottom Hopton Mills in Championship B with a five-wicket home defeat by Gomersal.

Brighouse were 19 for three and 80 for six before Samar Farooq led a rearguard action with a patient 30 not out.

The Russell Way Men looked as if they might be able to defend a modest total of 151 for nine when Aleem Ladak struck four times to leave Gomersal 55 for five but that proved the limit of their success with the ball.

Skipper Graham Hilton (59no) and Jack Seddon (66no) put on exactly 100 to win the game for their side.

Northowram Fields recovered from a shocking start at Heckmondwike & Carlinghow to maintain their healthy lead at the top of the Conference.

They were soon four for three and then 20 for four before Chris Metcalf cut loose in typical fashion to transform the visitors’ innings.

He hit 136 off 108 balls, including 10 fours and 12 sixes and shared a stand of 173 with Jason Smith (41).

Shakeel Mahmood hit 57 off 36 balls and Dewsbury RL coach Glenn Morrison 30 not out as the Rams piled up 290 for seven.

Paceman Josh Bennett-Kear took five for 50 as Heckmondwike were dismissed for 142 with Usma Quereshi (69) and Maqsood Hashmi (35) the only batsmen in double figures.

Walsden went into today’s Wood Cup semi-final at Saddleworth having stretched their lead at the top of the Pennine League to seven points.

A disciplined bowling performance in a 36 overs per side contest at Rochdale yesterday enabled them to register a 33 runs win.

Walsden made 149 for nine, with 41 from Nick Barker, but their hosts found it even harder going.

Jamie Shackleton struck two early blows, dismissing Aussie pro William Bosisto, and Sri Lankan Umesh Karunaratne took four for 24 off 12 to limit Rochdale to 116 for six.

Todmorden go to Nelson today in the Lancashire League, having booked their place in the T20 final for the first time.

The Centre Vale Park spectators saw Ashton Turner at his best on Friday, the Australian hitting 11 fours and five sixes in a 46-ball 97 against East Lancashire.

That helped Tod overhaul the visitors’ 141 for five in a contest cut to 15 overs a side.

The other semi-final between Rishton and Church was put back to next Friday due to a waterlogged pitch.

Illingworth’s poor run continued with a narrow defeat to Follifoot in Division Two of the Aire/Wharfe League.

They looked in the driving seat at tea, having dismissed the visitors from Harrogate for 142.

Follifoot were 70 for three before Stephen Cook took three wickets in 11 balls and Daniel Murfet took a diving one handed catch off his own bowling to dismiss his Australian counterpart, Justin Galeotti.

Murfet then took two more wickets to leave Follifoot reeling on 89 for nine and Illingwoth were left to rue a no ball when Jonny Lamb took a catch at mid wicket with the score on 96.

The last pair added 53 and that eventually proved decisive.

Illingworth lost both openers early on, before Matthew Smith and Luke Brooksby fought back with a partnership of 39.

Brooksby’s dismissal sparked a collapse, four wickets falling in three overs, and when two more wickets went down Illingworth looked out of the game at 71 for eight.

Matthew Smith and Lamb added 36 runs before a slip caused Lamb to be run out. Illingworth fell 21 runs short with Smith last man out for 58.
