Crocs well beaten at Barnsley

Old Crossleyans were unable to back up their opening Yorkshire Two win over Sheffield Medicals the previous week when beaten 47-15 at Barnsley yesterday.

It was a disappointing result against South Yorkshire hosts who went into the game with a modest record but looked strong, quick and well drilled.

The Broomfield men were lacking No 8 Oliver Coyne and Sweeney brothers, Gareth and Ryan, who normally kick their goals.

Playing against the wind in the first half, they were fortunate only to trail to a penalty from home marksman Callum Emery after 15 minutes.

Emery missed with a second attempt and Barnsley also dropped the ball with the try line open.

Crocs at last got into the home half. Prop Phil Shedlbauer was held short before winger Joe Baker charged down the left.

Barnsley got their first try five minutes before the break through centre Maika Burenivalu, after spreading the ball to the right, but the kick was missed.

Crocs responded through Jack Hammond and centre Lewis Sharp, but winger Ryan Price was unable to gather the pass with the line open.

Emery kicked a penalty to make it 11-0 at the break and Barnsley extended their lead with two tries - one of them converted - from centre Will Smith and winger Ryan Exley in the corner for a 23-0 advantage.

Flanker Chris Beck also touched down for the hosts but Sharp replied from a tap penalty on the hour, jinking over near the posts. Zane Sanders’ kick was blown wide.

Home No 8 Dave Reed replied immediately, Emery converting, but Hammond sent in Sharp for his second.

Replacement Tom Henigan crossed and Smith barged over in the corner following a lineout as Barnsley moved out to 47-10 but Joe Baker scored a last minute breakaway try in the corner.

Halifax drew 13-13 at home to Northallerton in Yorkshire Three, the pair having lost their previous three outings this season.

In the same section, Halifax Vandals went down 17-5 at home to Baildon, who have a 100 per cent record so far.
